FRED is a simulation tool that can be used for virtually any optical application. FRED’s strength lies in its non-sequential simulation through complex systems (i.e., from the beam source to the imaging plane or detector). It is possible to simulate the propagation of coherent light (Gaussian beam decomposition) and incoherent light (e.g., LEDs). FRED’s large scope of application and 3D display make it a flexible raytracing simulation tool for inexperienced users as well as for experienced specialists.
In keeping with this, classic areas of application for FRED raytracing software are imaging and illumination systems, scattered light and ghost analysis, simulation, and optimization.
Advances in graphical processing unit (GPU) technology have made massively parallel computing accessible on nearly every PC.
